Key Updates for Indian Travelers to Phu Quoc, Viet Nam

Updates for Indian Travelers to Phu Quoc, Viet Nam

Dear our valued partners,

The Embassy of India in Hanoi has recently issued an important advisory for Indian nationals traveling to Viet Nam. To ensure a smooth experience for your guests and to avoid any legal or logistical hurdles, we have summarized the most critical points below.

1. Important note on Phu Quoc Visa Exemptions

While Indian citizens can enjoy visa-free entry specifically for Phu Quoc Island, there are some major “fine print” details travelers need to know:

  • Strictly Limited Area: This visa exemption is valid only for staying within Phu Quoc Island. It does not permit entry into mainland Viet Nam.
  • The “Emergency” Risk: If an unforeseen event occurs—such as a medical emergency or a major flight disruption—and the traveler needs to go to the mainland (e.g., Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi) for treatment or assistance, they will face significant challenges. Without a valid mainland visa, guests will likely experience delays in accessing hospitals and face complicated immigration issues.
  • Recommendation: The Embassy strongly advises Indian travelers to obtain a proper Viet Nam visa before their trip, even if they only plan to stay on Phu Quoc. Having that visa is the best “insurance policy” for unexpected situations.

2. What to Do if a Passport is Lost

Losing a passport is stressful, but following the correct steps is vital for getting home:

  • Step 1: Police Report: The traveler must immediately file a report with the local police where the passport was lost. This report is required by the Embassy/Consulate.
  • Step 2: Emergency Certificate: The Embassy in Hanoi or the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City will aim to issue an Emergency Travel Document on the same day the request is received.
  • Step 3: The Exit Permit (Crucial Timing): Even after getting a new travel document from the Embassy, the traveler cannot leave immediately. Vietnamese authorities usually takes 3 to 5 working days to issue an Exit Permit. In some cases, it can take longer. Guests must remain in Viet Nam until this permit is granted.

3. Helpful Tips for Travel Partners:

Viet Dan Travel suggests some pro tips for partners as below:

  • Be Proactive: When booking trips for Indian clients to Phu Quoc, encourage them to apply for an E-visa anyway. It’s a small cost for a lot of peace of mind.
  • Safety First: Advise guests to keep digital and physical copies of their passports and visas in separate locations.
  • Manage Expectations: If a guest loses their passport, be transparent that the “3-5 day” wait for an exit permit is a standard government process that cannot be skipped.

We hope this information helps you better serve your clients and ensures they have a safe, memorable time in Vietnam!
